Compilations - Unforgettable Ghazals

Ghazal is a poetic form consisting of rhyming couplets and a refrain, with each line sharing the same meter. A ghazal may be understood as a poetic expression of both the pain of loss or separation and the beauty of love in spite of that pain. The form is ancient, originating in 6 th - century Arabic verse. It is derived from the Arabian panegyric qasida. The structural requirements of the ghazal are similar in stringency to those of the Petrarchan sonnet. In style and content it is a genre that has proved capable of an extraordinary variety of expression around its central themes of love and separation. It is one of the principal poetic forms which the Indo-Perso-Arabic civilization offered to the eastern Islamic world. Source http://en.wikipedia....

Lakshmi Shankar - Evening Concert

Lakshmi Shankar has a heavenly voice, sweet and clear. The "Khyal in Raga Dhaani" is in a blues-like pentatonic scale, and the romantic "Thumri" are delivered in an innocent, direct, lyrical melodiousness. The bhajan "Gopala," by the 16th-century poet Nidhiram, is totally engaging in its pleading yet devotional quality, with Shankar beginning at a high point right from the onset. "Janama Marana," by the saint/poetess of the 16th century, Mirabai, who gave up her life as a queen for devotion to Lord Krishna, has a loving, serious quality. It is a thoroughly enjoyable album. ~ "Blue" Gene Tyranny, All Music Guide

Dr. Soma Ghosh - Ishq - Live In Mumbai

Her mastery over classical music was lauded even by the legendary Ustad Bismillah Khan and the great film music composer, Naushad. In fact, it was the latter who encouraged Dr. Soma Ghosh to sing ghazals. He felt that she had the soul of the illustrious ghazal singer Begum Akhtar in her. And Dr. Ghosh now seems to have fulfilled the legendary musician’s dream. On the evening of April 20, the noted classical vocalist from Banaras held music buffs enthralled with her masterly renditions of ghazals at Mumbai’s Rangasharda Natya Mandir. The show presented by Blue Cross, Sham-e-Akhtari, was Dr. Ghosh’s heartfelt tribute to Begum Akhtar. “Begum Akhtar has been my favourite ghazal singer ever since I began listening to ghazals. In addition, it was the great Naushad saab’s dream that I sing ghazals along with classical music. So I feel deeply privileged at having been able to pay this tribute to one legend and to fulfill the dream of another,” said Dr. Ghosh. Dr. Soma Ghosh recently won the Best Ghazal singer award of 2010-11, at the Big Star IMA Awards, for her album ‘Ishq’. She is also the founder of the NGO Madhoo Murchhana, which strives to preserve India’s ancient musical heritage, including the attempts to save musical instruments that could soon become extinct.

Compilations - Hasrat (Album Version)

Four Ghazal stalwarts come together to create some great magical moments on the biggest ghazal album of the year - HASRAT. The album is a bouquet of 8 new beautiful ghazals and has all fresh-brewed melodies packed by some excellent musicianship and top quality production values. During the summer of 2009, composer Bobby Jutley along with his father Mohan Jutley who has penned the lyrics for the album, got all the singers together to be a part of this masterpiece. The melodies have been composed in traditional ghazal style and the music beautifully compliments the emotional and poetical rollercoaster.

Poem of Kabir - Dulhan Gawat Mangal Char - Shubha Mudgal

Shubha Mudgal has followed the true calling of an artist by following her heart and instincts. Many of the old dowagers of 'tradition' have outcasted her for this as they will refute anything which shakes their complacent smugness. But who can call themselves true artists if they do not experiment, explore, try the various shades of their personas? Shubha's independence which must be very upsetting for those who keep a death grip on our culture. Art without freedom is caricature

Compilations - Muzaffar Ali’s Jahan-E-Ishq Tribute To 350 Years Of Taj Mahal

Muzaffar Ali, essentially a painter and filmmaker deeply inspired by Sufism has developed a discerning eye and vision for aesthetics and humanity. He has established an in depth admiration for his creativity all over the world and follows his creative pursuits without compromise.Muzaffar Ali, who presented Jahan-e-Ishq: Sufi music in three genres. First were the Istanbul Music and Sema Ensemble. Presenting traditional Sufi music from Turkey, the 12 members, comprising six musicians and six sema (whirling Dervishes) were performing for the first time in Agra. The solemnity of the ritual was awe inspiring, the music lilting, and, as happens with music of Eastern Europe and West Asia, similar yet different from the Indian. But it was Shujaat who caught the pulse of the city by blending Kabir, Amir Khusrau and U.P. folk. Hearing his mesmerising voice and his virtuoso sitar playing, the crowd clapped and cheered just like the anchor had earlier asked them to. As Abida Parveen’s turn came, the level of expectancy was very high. Of course, she did not disappoint. Her’s too is a rendition that seamlessly blends the ritual with the performance, the presentation to an audience with a complete surrender to the Almighty. As for sound, one wondered how the Agra Fort and its birds, to mention only two of the affected parties, would withstand the decibel level. Set designer Ashok Sagar Bhagat remarked rather ruefully that 20 years of the fort’s life must have been shaken out of it by the vibrations, and hoped he wouldn’t agree to design a set for such an event that caused damage to the heritage site again. Lakshmi Shankar - Ecstasy

A Scintillating Khyal Album by LAKSHMI SHANKER Lakshmi Shankar is one of the most celebrated singers performing today in the North Indian (Hindustani) style of music. While her concerts have brought her worldwide success as a classical artiste, she has simultaneously developed a great reputation as a singer of devotional lyrics. She is best known for her performances - over several decades! - of the work of poets such as Surdas and, especially, Mira Bai: for many listeners her name is virtually synonymous with that of Mira, as her voice brings out every nuance of the pain of love expressed by the Rajasthani princess who lived five hundred years ago.

This CD was recorded in a London during her concert tour celebrating her 70th Birthday: she is accompanied by the noted sarangi master Pandit Ramesh Mishra and a promising young UK-based tabla player Partha Sarathi Mukherjee.

Compilations - Yaadgaar Thumriyan Volume One

Thumri is a common style of light classical music. The text is romantic and devotional in nature, and usually revolves around a girl’s love for Krishna. The language is a dialect of Hindi called Brij bhasha. This style is characterized by a greater flexibility with the rag. The compositions are usually set to kaherava of 8 beats, addha tal of 16 beats, or dipchandi of 14 beats. It arose in popularity during the 19th century.

Compilations - Choicest Dadras

Dadra tal is six or three beat tal which is extremely common in the the lighter forms of music. It is is commonly found in qawwalis, film songs, bhajans, gazals, and folk music throughout India. The name is derived from its association with the dadra style of singing. This is a semiclassical form that is somewhat similar to thumri. The dadra style of singing in turn, derives its name from the place where it began. There are a number of reasons for Dadra’s extreme popularity. One reason is the ease in performing in three and six beats; it is very symmetrical and posses no great challenge. Another reason for it being so common lies in the Indian taxonomy of tals. Virtually any tal of three, six, and 12-matras of folk origins, is routinely lumped under the title of Dadra. Even though they may have no cultural connections, traditional Indian musicology considers them to be the same tal. Therefore, the large number of musical tributaries contributes greatly to the variety of prakars, its popularity, and the geographical distribution of Dadra.

Shobha Gurtu & Sultan Khan - Saiyan Nikas Gaye

Sobha Gurtu might best be known in the West for being the mother of percussionist Trilok Gurtu, but in India she is a renowned performer in her own right, considered to be one of the nation’s greatest singers of light classical music, a style which makes use of the same forms as classical but relaxes the rules a bit. The melodies are often borrowed from folk music and the usual subject is love.

Abida Parveen Collection

http://firozjuma.com...

No, she is not a saint. But when she sings, the saints seem to speak to us through Abida Parveen’s electrifying voice. A voice that alternates weary grief with radiant joy, quiet trance with dancing rhythms, until the individual quest turns into a binding community experience.

Born in Larkhana, Sindh, little Abida grew up in a family closely connected to the Sufi dargahs where congregational singing was part of culture, and poets such as Abdul Lateef Bhittai, Sachal Sarmast and Bulleh Shah were venerated as prophets. For Abida, singing their verses was like breathing. Later, she was to make her own, the songs of Muhammad Baksh, Ghulam Farid and Shah Hussain from the Punjab, Jalaluddin Rumi from Turkey, Amir Khusro, Nizamuddin Auliya and Moinuddin Chisti from India.

Sufi poets spoke in the common tongue, deploying local legends and idioms, even as they sought to unite earth and sky, the love of man with the love of God. Simple? But so iconoclastic that the Persian mystic Mansur was executed for heresy when he insisted ‘Ana-l-aqq’ — I am the truth, which diehard mullahs interpreted as a claim of divinity.

The scholar will say that Sufism is a syncretic blend of Vedanta and Islam, reflecting both the virah-milan (separation-union) of vaishnava surrender, and the advaitic oneness of the human soul and the Oversoul.

But ask Abida Parveen, and she will say in courtly Urdu: “The universe emerged from God’s music (alaap). The message of Allah comes to us through the music of the saints. We learn that pain ( dard) is the other side of love ( mohabbat). When we find the path to God, we find peace, we forget the world. Peer and dargah remind us of this universal truth.”

Though known for her reticence, reputed to be sparing of speech, Abida Parveen decided to share her experiences generously with The Hindu. Her eloquence is obviously shaped by poetry, for which she has a passion, perhaps, greater than for music. Every thought is illustrated with a verse, particularly from Kabir. Her words bristle with connotations, just as a melodic phrase trails microtones.
