The man credited with pioneering the Ghazal performing form as is prevalent today is none other than the celebrated ghazal singer Mehdi Hassan. Born in India Rajasthan in 1927 Mehdi’s family migrated to Pakistan posr-independence. Mehdi though had been initiated into music since the tender age of 8 by his father Ustad Azeem Khan and uncle Ustad Ismail Khan who were classical musicians. His surging popularity over the last 5 decades and his mastery over classical music makes him a one-off artist with no peers. It is Mehdi sahib, who without resorting to dazzling his fasteners with fast paced rhythms sticks to soulful singing, nuancing every written word with soul-stirring emotion. His command over difficult ragas also makes him a complete composer as he uses the right ragas to embellish tunes that stand true to the mood of the Shayar’s (Poets) basic inspiration. His legion of fans amongst others includes the nightingale of India, Lata Mangeshkar, who once said that Mehdi Hassan’s is the “Voice Of God”

Hassan first appeared on Radio Pakistan in 1952 and after that, his success was meteoric. Leading poets such as Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Ahmad Faraz and Qateel Shifai were happy to have their verses set to haunting music and sung by him. Hassan was now associated with the literary and musical elite. His voice featured on the soundtrack of many Pakistani films, and ghazal singers on both sides of the border paid homage to him.
Hassan thus became an abiding cultural bridge between India and Pakistan. He often returned to visit the village of his birth. His popularity in India was immense, and whenever he performed there he was heaped with garlands and gifts and showered with awards. The Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar, with whom he recorded a duet in 2009, compared his singing to “the voice of a god”.
01 Kubaku Phail Gayee Baat

He was perfect in ghazal singing, an amazing mix of classical and semi-classical.
He gave meaning to the ghazals he sang; and conveyed the message much better than the poet himself/herself. Each and every word of the ghazal he sang transformed into a fascinating melody and touched the strings of the heart.
01 Har Pal Meri Ankhon Mein
02 Kuch Chehrey Aise Hote Hain
03 Iqrar Mein Karti Hoon
04 Rang Jeevan Mein
05 Hai Logon Ki Zuban Par
06 Yeh Manzar Yeh Nazarey
07 Baat Choti Si
08 Kuch Chehray Aise Hote Hain

In its original and simplest form, ghazal is a form of poetry written in two-line stanzas. Traditionally it is a poetic expression of love and pain, beauty and nature. In recent years it has also been adapted for political, religious and social uses.
Ghazal had a small, elite audience before Mr. Hassan, who sang in Urdu in a mellow, velvety baritone voice, began attracting a following, first on the Indian subcontinent and then beyond. His fans included members of the rock and hip-hop generation, and his influence was so great that even some leading Pakistani and Indian classical vocalists took up ghazal singing.
The Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar once likened Mr. Hassan’s songs to the “voice of god” — a voice that defined a pan-Asian melancholy.

In 1957, Mehdi Hassan was given the opportunity to sing on Radio Pakistan, primarily as a thumri singer, which earned him recognition within the musical fraternity. He had a passion for Urdu poetry, and therefore, he began to experiment by singing ghazals on a part-time basis. He cites radio officers Z.A. Bukhari and Rafiq Anwar as additional influences in his progression as a ghazal singer. His very first superhit song was ” Jis ne mere dil ko dard diya” film Susral in 1962 .Gradually, he became one of the most popular ghazal singers in Pakistan and the neighbouring India. Later Lata Mugeshkar said compliments for him that “Bhagwan talks in his throat”. Source: http://en.wikipedia....
