Parween Sultana

Parween Sultana was born in Gowgong in Assam in 1950. She was steeped in the lore and lives of the great musical masters by her father, Janal Ikramul Majib, a classical music devotee and a great admirer of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. From an early age her father would take her to music festivals. "I come from a very conservative Muslim family and Muslims are very, very conservative," she told me in 1991. In spite of this, her father encouraged her dawning interest in singing. It led in time to the much frowned-upon practice of singing in public. She debuted on stage at the age of nine. In 1965 she recorded her first EP for EMI India, and in 1967 her first LP for the same label. She trained with Chinmoy Lahiri for ten years before failing health necessitated him suggesting a replacement in the Bombay-based Dilshad Khan. She balked at this initially, only accepting him as her guru in August 1974. They married on August 26, 1975. Since then they have each pursued solo careers parallel to their duo work. An adjunct of her classical work is her occasional moonlighting in the Indian film industry. She has, for example, sung for the soundtracks of Ashary, Kudrat and Pakeezah.

Raag Kafi (AIR) -Pt. L K Pandit.mp3

THE LEGACY

PANDIT LAXMANRAO KRISHNA PANDIT (b-1934)

For Panditji music is life tradition, the soul. It is his strict classicism and refusal to compromise with what is popular has earned him the reputation of being one of the only true representatives of his gharana.

Pt. Laxman Krishnarao Pandit represents the Gwalior gharana (school) of Hindustan classical music – the oldest tradition and the fountainhead of all subsequent gharanas. Born on 5 March 1934 into a family of musicians, Panditji is the fifth in an unbroken lineage of legendary musicians. His grandfather, Pt. Shankarrao Pandit, was a direct disciple of the founder of the Gwalior gharana – Ustad Haddu, Nathu and Nissar Hussain Khan. His father Padma Bhushan Pt. Krishnarao Shankar Pandit trained Panditji since early childhood in khayal, tappa, tarana, ashtapadi and thumri.

The accuracy of his notes is legendary, and his Khayal style unparalleled. He follows the Gwalior gharana formate faithfully, and develops ragas in Ashtaang gayaki, (a systematic eight-fold elaboration of the raga).Which are alap-behlawa, bol-alap, taan, bol-taans, layakari, gamak, meend-soot, murki-khatka-jamjama, with its varieties. He combines sound Knowledge of ragas with masterly handling of rhythm, which makes climaxing at the 'sam' a unique experience each time.

Laxman Pandit is one of the few musician today who can render the difficult genre of tappa with ease and fluidity. Tappa is the most taxing form of singing and demands instant, protracted moves up and down the saptak (octave), which calls for constant innovation, apart from superb breath-holding holding capacity.

Panditji's repertoire includes a treasure house of some of the rarest, ancient and most beautiful bandishes (compositions), handed down to him by his illustrious ancestors. To make sure that these do not go into oblivion, some have been recorded by the Ford Foundation, Sangeet Natak Acakemi, Samvad Foundation, All India Radio and other archival institutional.

Besides being an excellent performer, Panditji's contribution to music is his excellence and throughness as a Guru(teacher). He was associated with the Faculty of Music and Fine Arts,Delhi University, as Professor and as Producer (music) with the All India Radio.

He has presented a popular serial on classical music appreciation, Prabhati, for television which was first of its kind. He is a serious scholar, and is currently engaged in documenting the style and compositions of his gharana, with a view to preserve them for posterity.

Panditji has given several thousands of concerts, radio and television performances in India and abroad and has a number of commercial releases to his credit. He is a Fellow and member of several distinguishes musical committees.

ZAHEEDA PARVEEN-Pakistani Prominent Star

Zahida Parveen was a Prominent Star of Patiala Gharana. Only few female singers in the subcontinent can match the control and power that she had in her voice. She started from singing pure classical on Lahore Radio and then joined movies as a singer in the early Pak Films such as Hichkolay (which incidentally was the first Pak Movie whose songs were recorded on 78rpm gramophone records before the release of movie. There were no records made of Pakistan’s first movie Teri Yaad and the Vinyl Records of movie Shahida were made from film print) Zahida Parveen?s first song for movie was Mathay pe Jhoomar which was penned by Saif-ud-Din Saif and Master Inayat Hussain was its Music Director. Zahida sang for a number of initial movies like Jan-e-Bahar, Darbaar & Morni etc. (Her Songs from these movies are already on You Tube) Sadly her voice did not match the heroins and also being more inclined to classical singing she did not like film field much and thats why after marriage to a landlord when she settled in a village near Multan, she only sang Sufi Poetry and re-earned a special place in Sufi Poetry called Kaafi singing. She sang a lot of those at Multan Radio Station and also recorded at Lok Virsa Islamabad and some private concerts.

02 Raga Multani Todi - Bajo Re Muhammad Shah
